Seven-thousand new condo units have been approved by Toronto City Council, adding to the nearly 70,000 already set to be built.  Yesterday’s decision is leaving some on council wondering if the city’s infrastructure can keep up.  Joe Mihevc says “we’re experiencing a Manhattanization of downtown Toronto and even the city planners aren’t sure if more condos will stress the infrastructure.” Chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat admits there is risk going forward with condo development at this rate without knowing if infrastructure development can match it.  She goes on to say “our quality of life is going to begin to suffer if we don’t put the brakes on some of that growth.”  The development is a financial boon that’s hard for council to turn down.  The city has the highest rate of development anywhere in the world, even before councillors approved $21-billion in new development, mostly in the downtown core. City councillors resume their marathon meeting this morning at 9:30.
