Canada is involved in the latest news from the ebola crisis in West Africa. Three Canadian scientists have been told to leave the African nation of Sierra Leone for fear they may have been exposed to the virus. They’ve been in Sierra Leone to run a mobile laboratory as part of the international efforts to control the ebola outbreak. The recall comes after learning people in the hotel they’ve been staying in have been diagnosed with ebola. The risk of the three being infected is said to be very low but every precaution is being taken as they return home to Canada.
Health experts at the United Nations in New York say the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed more than 14-hundred people in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria.
The U.N.’s Stephane Dujarric says a disproportionate number of victims were health care workers. “The World Health Organization explains that this heavy toll by the fact that neither doctors nor the public were familiar with the disease in these countries,” Dujarric explained.
A man from Senegal who became infected in by the virus in Sierra Leone has arrived in Hamburg, Germany for treatment. He was working for the World Health Organization as a consultant and is being treated in Germany at the UN agency’s request.
