The Metropolitan Opera season will open after all.

The fall schedule was in jeopardy because of difficult contract talks with the many unions representing employees.

Contracts with unions representing the orchestra and chorus were announced on Monday. Now the Met says it has come to terms with the powerful stagehands union. The company and IATSE reached a tentative agreement yesterday.

Fifteen unions had been negotiating for new contracts, representing about 2,500 workers. General manager Peter Gelb had been asking for pay cuts of about 17 per cent. There was strong resistance from the unions, and a federal mediator had to be brought in to help.

All the contracts much still be ratified. Assuming that happens, the season will open September 22nd with Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro.
