The suburban Chicago bakery where the Twinkie was invented and has been made for almost 85 years, is going to close in October, putting 400 people out of work.
This has nothing to do with consumers moving away from Twinkies because of health concerns. Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and now says with so many competitors, it has to become highly efficient and technologically advanced. Ironically it was efficiencies that led to the Twinkie’s creation back in 1930. Apparently the cream filled snack cake was developed by a bakery manager looking for uses for idle shortcake pans.
