An important archaeological find in Rome is going to be buried again.

Racing stables of the Roman Emperor Augustus were discovered five years ago, and called an “extremely important” find by Rome’s archaeological authority. They had hoped to have the stables restored for this year’s 2000th anniversary of Augustus’s death. But the city couldn’t find the funds to restore the stables near the Circus Maximus. So they are being buried again.

Authorities had hoped to capitalize on a trend by major Italian fashion houses to fund restorations. But they couldn’t find any takers for the stables. So the marble statues of Augustus are being covered with waterproof cloth before the site is re-buried. It’s considered a better option than leaving it exposed to the elements or looters until the funds can be found.
