America is standing firm in its fight with Islamist State terrorists – who beheaded U.S. journalist James Foley in Iraq.

President Barack Obama has promised to continue attacking the group – even though it has threatened to kill another American hostage.

His pledge came as the U.S. military continued airstrikes against the group.

Obama denounced them as “a cancer” threatening the entire region – and said “we will be vigilant and we will be relentless.”

International condemnation has followed Foley’s brutal murder – which was captured on video and released by the terrorists.

Germany has announced it will supply Kurds in Iraq with weapons to fight the insurgents. And Italy’s defence minister says the country hopes to contribute arms and ammunition, including anti-tank rockets.

Since the video came out Tuesday, 14 airstrikes have been conducted by the U.S. military on Islamic State targets – and today U.S. officials said planners were considering the possibility of sending a small number of additional troops to Iraq – mainly for additional security around Baghdad.

40-year-old Foley went missing in northern Syria in November 2012 while he was a freelance reporter. The car he was riding in was stopped by four militants in a battle zone that both Sunni rebels and government forces were trying to control. He hadn’t been heard from since.

The New-York based Committee to Protect Journalists says more than 80 journalists have been abducted in Syria. The group estimates that approximately 20 are currently missing there.
