A second rare painting that was part of a trove of art found in the apartment of late collector Cornelius Gurlitt – was indeed stolen by the nazis from its Jewish owner.
That’s the conclusion of experts – who say that Max Liebermann’s “Two Riders On The Beach” was “with high probability” looted from David Friedmann – and rightfully belongs to his descendants.
In November authorities revealed that they had seized 1,280 works from Gurlitt’s apartment in Munich while they were investigating him for tax evasion.
He had inherited the huge collection of rare art from his father – an art dealer who traded in works confiscated by the nazis.
Gurlitt died in May. He reached an agreement a month before that with the German government – for the artworks to be examined – and those looted by the nazis to be returned.
