The man who once proclaimed “subways, subways, subways” now considers transit a secondary issue in the current Toronto election campaign.
Rob Ford held a hastily-called news conference yesterday to try to re-focus the election campaign on the economy. While most of his opponents are talking about transit, Ford wanted to make the case that the economy is more important, and he’s the only one who knows how to keep taxes low.
He raised some eyebrows when he said, “If you haven’t got a job, you won’t need transit.”
Various groups have since raised issue with Ford’s claim. Adina Lebo is the Chair of the Toronto Chapter of CARP — a new vision of aging. She says retired Torontonians use tranist all the time to stay involved and get around town.
Rajean Hoilett is the President of the Ryerson University Students’ Union. He tells the Toronto Star that transit is a priority issue for students trying to get to campus.
Many Toronto residents have called transit a priority issue in this election.
