Ukraine has agreed on a Red Cross-led humanitarian aid operation with Russia, the European Union and other international partners.
The aim is to ease the suffering in the separatist-held city of Luhansk.
President Petro Poroshenko’s office said in a statement that the plan had received backing from U.S. President Obama.
The Kremlin earlier announced that it was dispatching the humanitarian convoy.
But Ukraine has objected to Russia sending any aid to the region.
Western countries have warned Russia that any attempt to send military personnel into Ukraine under the guise of humanitarian assistance – would be seen as an invasion.
Meanwhile — Australia’s prime minister is visting the Netherlands to discuss the shooting down of the Malaysian airliner over eastern Ukraine.
Tony Abbott isn’t mincing words, saying “Let’s be absolutely crystal clear about what happened. 298 innocent people were murdered.”
