A shadow has been cast over one of NASCAR’s most accomplished and highly paid drivers.  43 year old Tony Stewart dropped out of a race yesterday, hours after fatally running over a driver at a dirt track in New York State.  Stewart faced a wave of criticism on social media when it appeared he planned to compete in the Sprint Cup series at Watkins Glen International.  But the competition director for the race said at a news conference yesterday that Tony Stewart felt it was the right thing to do after the death of Kevin Ward Jr.

The crash happened Saturday.  20 year old Ward had crashed following a bump with Stewart one lap earlier.  Video then shows Ward walking from his crashed car onto the racing surface.  As he gestured at Stewart’s passing car, he was struck and killed.

Criminal charges have not been ruled out … but investigators also don’t have any evidence to support criminal intent.  Spectators are being urged to turn over photos and videos of the crash.
