Brampton’s mayor is defending her expenses that are about to become the subject of a police investigation.
Brampton City Council has voted to hand a forensic audit of Susan Fennell’s spending over to police.
The audit says Susan Fennell and her staff broke spending rules 265 times.
But Fennell says most of them were breaches of policy that were accepted practice at the time. She says her staff paid for higher priced economy plane tickets because they offered the flexibility to change flights without a penalty if her schedule changed.
Fennell also lashed out at her opponents on council who pushed for the audit. She says she is in favour of the police investigation because some councillors will continue trying to discredit her.
Fennell is seeking re-election. She says she wants the police review of the audit to happen before the October 27th vote.
It’ll be review by police outside Peel since the mayor sits on the Peel Police Services Board.
