Toronto-bound lanes of the Burlington Skyway Bridge are closed and could remain that way for at least part of the long weekend.

A news release from the City of Burlington says the bridge structure sustained significant damage when a commercial dump truck crashed into it.  Structural engineers have been dispatched to the scene by the Ministry of Transportation where they are assessing the structural integrity of the Skyway Bridge.

Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring tells CP24, the streets of his city are expected to be very busy during the closure.  “We’re going to have a lot of traffic cut through Burlington because people are going to have to use the Lift Bridge which goes over the canal…and it’s going to be very, very, very slow and very very congested because there’s only really one lane going each way for the most part.”

The driver of the truck that crashed into the Skyway is a 34 year old man from Brampton.  OPP have charged Sukhvinder Singh Rai with two impaired driving related offenses.
