A letter from a soldier from a battlefield in France is included in a Calgary exhibit marking the centennial of the Great War.

University student Michael Hilton says his great-grandfather, Sgt. Edward Iley wrote it on the fabric from the wing of a German aircraft his unit shot down, then sent it to his daughter, along with the pocket watches of the pilot and co-pilot.

The letter was discovered in a pack of old photos.

Hilton says he has the name of one of the German soldiers but has not been able to contact any family members to return the watch.
