A Nobel Prize-winning writer from South Africa has died.

Nadine Gordimer was an author and political activist in her homeland – who fought against apartheid and was active in HIV-AIDS issues.

Gordimer’s first novel was “The Lying Days,” published in 1953 – and her 1981 novel, “Judy’s People,” which predicted the end of apartheid – was banned in South Africa when it was released.

Gordimer won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991.

Canada’s Margaret Atwood calls Gordimer’s death “a huge loss for literature and the spirit of humanity.”  In a tweet, Atwood thanked Gordimer for her “fearless inspiration.”
