A Scottish painter’s tribute to a piece of Toronto graffiti has netted a new auction record for the artist. Peter Doig’s oil painting of Toronto’s rainbow tunnel sold at Sotheby’s in London Monday night for $14.4 million. The painting, officially known as “Country-Rock (wing mirror)”, depicts the rainbow painted underpass as seen from the Don Valley Parkway near Lawrence Avenue. The rainbow tunnel was first painted by Norwegian mural artist ‘Berg” Johnson in 1972 and has been restored many times since. Doig was born in Scotland and grew-up in Canada. His 1991 landscape “Road House” sold for $13 million at an auction in New York in May and another of his Toronto-inspired works “Jetty” sold for about $10.5 million in London in June 2013.
