At 105, his age alone would set him apart as an exceptional individual.  But Sir Nicholas Winton has a far greater achievement.  He is the man who saved 669 Jewish children from the Holocaust.  And he celebrated his 105th birthday with news he is to receive the Czech Republic’s highest honour.  Winton will be awarded the Order of the White Lion for giving “the greatest possible gift – the chance to live and to be free.”

In 1939, Sir Nicholas orchestrated the transportation of the children from Nazi-occuped Czechoslovakia to Britain, ultimately saving them from the concentration camps.

Nicky’s Children as they are called, now have some 6000 descendants.  On Monday, Sir Nicholas was presented with a cake bearing 105 candles at the Czech embassy in London.
