NDP DRAWS CRITICISM FOR LACK OF POLICY ANNOUNCEMENTS

Polls by two research companies are painting a very different picture of how the Ontario election is shaping up.

Ipsos-Reid says the Conservatives are in the lead with 39% support. The Liberals have 30%.

But Forum Research puts the Liberals out front with 38% and the Tories close behind at 35%.

The companies agree on one thing: the NDP is trailing in both surveys. And NDP leader Andrea Horwath is drawing criticism because her party still hasn’t released its platform.

University of Windsor political scientist Lydia Milgin says the NDP is risking being ignored as the other parties roll out their platforms. Andrea Horwath drew criticism yesterday from Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion who said she doesn’t know what Horwath stands for.

But York University professor Ian Roberge says the election is still four weeks away, and there could be a benefit in holding back some announcements to maintain interest and momentum.

The NDP triggered the election by pulling support from the minority Liberals, but it’s still the only party without a full slate of candidates.

The leaders are concentrating on southwestern Ontario today. Kathleen Wynne is campaigning in Walkerton and Waterloo. Tim Hudak is in London and Guelph. Andrea Horwath is in Toronto and Sarnia.
