An American director who is spending a great deal of time in Southern Ontario this year has won Sweden’s major music prize.

Peter Sellars has been named one of two winners of the 2014 Polar Prize.

The prize committee says Sellars has showed that classical music is not about dusty sheet music, but “a way of reflecting and depicting the world.”

Sellars recently staged Handel’s Hercules for the Canadian Opera Company. He is also directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Stratford.

The Polar Prize was founded by the late Stig Anderson, who managed Sweden’s pop sensation, ABBA. It is customarily awarded to a classical and pop artist.

Sellars shares this year’s award with American rock’n’roll legend Chuck Berry.
