Big news on the Toronto arts scene.

The Toronto Star reports that Jeff Melanson is returning to take over the Toronto Symphony.

The news follows Melanson’s sudden departure from the Banff Centre.

Melanson established himself as one of Canada’s leading arts managers at the Royal Conservatory and the National Ballet School. He acted as a liaison between the arts community and the Mayor’s office during Rob Ford’s first year in office. He convinced Ford not to cut city investment in the arts.

Melanson’s resignation from the Banff Centre came not quite midway through his five year contract.

There has been no confirmation from the TSO. The company has been searching for a CEO to help it turn around a combination of declining audiences and an accumulated deficit of $12-million.
