A man who was elected to parliament more than a dozen times has died.

Herb Gray was first elected by voters in his home town of Windsor in 1962. He never lost his seat. Gray served in the cabinets of Pierre Trudeau, John Turner, and Jean Chretien. He was Deputy Prime Minister from 1997 until 2002 when he retired as an MP.

Grey spent almost 40 years in the Commons, longer than any MP in the last Century. On his retirement in 2002, he was granted the title “The Right Honourable” by the Governor General.

After his retirement from politics, he became the Canadian Chair of the International Joint Commission of Canada and the United States. He became Carleton University’s Chancellor in 2008.

Herb Gray died in hospital in Ottawa. He was 82.
