Dignitaries and the public will get a chance to say goodbye to Jim Flaherty today.
A state funeral for the former finance minister will be held at Toronto’s St. James Cathedral this afternoon at 3:00.
Prime Minister Harper, N-D-P Leader Thomas Mulcair, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, and Governor General David Johnston will lead a long list of dignitaries.
It’s only the third time in Canada’s history that a state funeral has been given to someone who isn’t a Prime Minister, Governor-General, or sitting member of the cabinet. The only others to be given the honour were former NDP leader Jack Layton in 2011; and Thomas D’Arcy Magee, who was assassinated in 1868.
There are road closures around the Cathedral: King and Adelaide between Church and Jarvis; Church Street and Jarvis southbound between King and Adelaide.
