Toronto’s Pearson Airport is changing the way it deals with extreme winter weather and other disruptions. The new policies are the result of a study into how the Greater Toronto Airport Authority handled a bout of extreme cold weather in January. The airport issued a ‘ground stop” that halted all North American flights from landing for 11 hours. That fouled travel through Canada’s busiest airport for days. The Greater Toronto Airport Authority has issued a dozen recommendations. They include new guidelines for responding to the needs of passengers during irregular operations. They also recommend the GTAA buy more emergency equipment to keep operations running. At the time, The GTAA came under fire for the way it handled the emergency, and its lack of transparency. Many local government leaders have complained that the Airport Authority acts autonomously, and is not subject to adequate oversight.
