Former federal Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty has died at 67-years of age. Emergency responders were called to his Ottawa home this afternoon. The cause of death has not been released but there unconfirmed reports that he died of a heart attack. Flaherty’s wife, Christine Elliott issued a statement confirming Flaherty’s death and that her husband died peacefully at his Ottawa home. She says she appreciates that he was so well supported in his public life by Canadians from coast to coast to coast and by his international colleagues. The family is asking for privacy at this time. Flaherty was one of the longest serving Canadian Ministers of Finance and until he left politics, was the only one to serve under Prime Minister, Stephen Harper. Flaherty stepped down on March 18th, denying that his health had anything to do with his resignation. He had been coping with a painful skin condition. A Conservative MP for the Toronto-area riding of Whitby-Oshawa, Flaherty was first elected in 2006.
