Mickey Rooney’s career lasted more than 80 years. He was one of the biggest box office stars of the Thirties and Forties. He was still working up until his death on Sunday at the age of 93.

But his will shows his estate to be worth about $18,000.

Rooney lost most of his fortune because he was a victim of elder abuse and financial mismanagement at the hands of a stepson who took over control of his life and his finances. A court ordered that the stepson repay millions, but Rooney’s lawyer says it was unlikely the estate would ever collect.

In 2011, Rooney spoke to a US Senate committee on elder abuse. He urged seniors to take control of their lives and end the cycle of abuse.

Rooney has left his estate to another stepson who was his caretaker.
