There’s more controversy surrounding Toronto’s embattled mayor.  Rob Ford was the lone member of Toronto City Council yesterday to vote against finding a street to dedicate to Nelson Mandela.  He was also the lone vote against a symbolic motion to congratulate Canada’s Olympians.  Both proposals passed 40-1.  But Ford rose about 35 minutes after the Mandela vote and about 20 minutes after the Olympics vote to say he had voted the wrong way both times.  He later explained to reporters he simply hit the wrong button.  “We all make errors.  We were going through these motions so fast, and I’m not using it as an excuse or anything, but, I couldn’t even move.  So I’m running back and forth and just trying to stretch my back and I came back, and I guess I pushed the wrong button.”

But some city councillors are saying, “don’t buy that explanation for a second.”  Josh Matlow says, “Ford casts votes out of disdain and disgust and just out of spite sometimes because of personal antipathy to a councillor who’s put forth the proposal.”  Adam Vaughan is also suspect of Ford’s button pushing explanation.  “He knew exactly what he was doing, because everyone when he did it, said ‘what are you doing Rob?’ and he shrugged his shoulders and let it go.  A half an hour later … when the twitter and social media went off the charts, his staff came and said ‘you better fix this, you like a fool’, and you know what, he is one.”

Toronto City Councillors meet again today when they are expected to vote on an expanded food truck plan for the city and an improved BMO field.
