Medbuy is getting the blame for diluted chemotherapy drugs given to 12 hundred cancer patients in Ontario and New Brunswick in 2012. An Ontario legislative committee says the national group purchasing organization did not do its due diligence in arranging a 2.6 million dollar contract with Marchese Health Care. Marchese provided the diluted drug mixture but extra saline in the bags effectively watered down the prescribed drug concentrations by up to 10 per cent. The hospitals that received the drugs were not aware that the bags contained extra saline and so didn’t adjust the doses accordingly. The committee recommends standardized labeling and oversight of group purchasing organizations such as Medbuy.
