The Obama administration says any Russian threat to Ukraine’s navy would be a dangerous escalation of an extremely tense situation.
The U-S State Department says Washington would hold Moscow directly accountable for such an escalation – but didn’t elaborate on potential consequences.
There were reports earlier in the day that Russia’s Black Sea Fleet had told the crew of two Ukrainian warships to surrender – or be boarded.
But State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki couldn’t confirm that Russia had made such threats.
And here at home, Prime Minister Harper says Canada and its G-7 partners have spoken with one voice – in condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military intervention in Ukraine – and he’s calling on Putin to withdraw his forces.
Harper says Canada has recalled it’s ambassador to Russia, suspended preparations for June’s G-8 summit in Sochi and cancelled any Canadian government representation at the Paralympic Games.
The Prime Minister says Putin’s actions have put his country on a course of diplomatic and economic isolation – that could see Russia exit the G-8 entirely.
