An economics professor at Wilfrid Laurier University wants to correct the impression that young people can’t find work because zoomers are clinging to their jobs. Tammy Schirle says while boomers do take up a large part of the workforce, there’s absolutely no evidence that they’re crowding out jobs that otherwise would be filled by younger people. Statistics Canada says the youth unemployment rate has dropped over the past five years to 13.7 per cent. Schirle says a lot of what she’s hearing from young people is based on their expectations as opposed to this being an unusually tough period for employment in the 15-to-24 age bracket.
