Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has arrived in Kiev. He’s in the Ukrainian capital to lead a Canadian delegation that is expected to meet Friday with members of the new government, opposition parties, civil society and religious groups. Meanwhile Ukraine’s new prime minister says the country’s future lies in the European Union but with friendly relations with Russia. But the political crisis is deepening, with Russia scrambling fighter jets to patrol its border and reportedly giving shelter to Ukraine’s fugitive president. And Pro-Russian gunmen stormed government offices in Ukraine’s strategic Crimea region, an act the interim president is condemning as a crime against the government of Ukraine. In Britain Prime Minister David Cameron is warning Russia not to intervene in Ukraine.U-S Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel is also urging Russia not to take any action toward Ukraine that could be misinterpreted. Earlier today Ukraine’s new parliament approved Arseniy Yatsenyuk as the new prime minister. He says he doesn’t want a fight with Russia, but the country would not accept the secession of the southern Crimea region.
