The government of Ontario will not fall this week.
The Opposition Conservatives were trying to convince the NDP to help defeat one of two routine motions that would allow the government to pay its bills. Because they’re about finances, they are considered confidence motion.
Conservative House Leader Jim Wilson says he can’t understand why the NDP would continue to prop up a government it has labeled as corrupt. But New Democrat leader Andrea Horwath says her party doesn’t want to engage in the same tactics that saw the Tea Party bring the US government to a standstill. She points out that, if they were to vote down the spending bills, Elections Ontario wouldn’t have the money to put on an election.
There is speculation that the spring budget might be defeated and trigger an election. Or Premier Wynne might decide to go to the voters.
