Ukraine’s parliament’s voted to give presidential powers to the speaker, but the legality of the vote’s unclear.

The speaker’s a close ally of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who was freed from prison yesterday.

That’s also when Viktor Yanukovych left the capital.

The president’s whereabouts remain a mystery, but he has said the recent decisions made by parliament are not legal.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Obama’s national security adviser says it would be a ”grave mistake” for Russia to intervene militarily.

And former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev says the crisis in Ukraine stems from the government’s failure to act democratically.

Ukraine became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
