YANUKOVYCH: CRISIS A COUP

Ukraine’s parliament has voted to call presidential elections for May 25.

The decision comes only hours after President Viktor Yanukovych said he wouldn’t respect any decisions made by parliament, would not resign and wouldn’t leave the country.

Under an agreement reached Friday between Yanukovych and leaders of the opposition protests, early elections were to be held no later than December.

However, the possibility Yanukovych might remain in office the rest of the year angers protesters who want him gone now.

Yanukovych is calling the country’s political crisis a coup and likens it to the rise of Nazis in the 1930s.

His remarks came in a broadcast statement after leaving the capital and going to eastern Ukraine, the heartland of his support.
