The International Olympic Committee calls  images of the attack on the Russian punk group Pussy Riot in Sochi “very unsettling.”

IOC spokesman Mark Adams says the regional governor has apologized for the attack and is investigating.

The comment comes as the band releases a video criticizing the games and Russian President Vladimir Putin. During a news conference, one of the members said, “The Olympics has turned the police state into a total police state and the authoritarian regime into a totalitarian regime.”

Cossack militia attacked the group yesterday with horsewhips as they tried to perform a protest song under a sign advertising the Sochi Olympics. The militia are being used to provide security at the games.

The attack was filmed as part of a protest video the band has just posted on YouTube called “Putin will teach you how to love the motherland.”
