Canada’s embassy in Kyiv has been shuttered due to security concerns but there’s word of a truce between the government and protesters demanding that the President step down.

There are no details yet but the President’s office issued a brief statement after Viktor Yanukovych met with top leaders of the protests – that have left at least 26 people dead and hundreds injured.

Tomorrow, the European Union will hold an extraordinary meeting of its 28 member countries to address the violence in Ukraine.

In advance of that, France, Poland and Germany have dispatched their foreign ministers to Kyiv to meet with government and opposition leaders.

The unrest began late last month when Ukraine’s president backed away from a pact that would deepen the former Soviet republic’s economic ties with the European Union – and move it closer to the sphere of Russia.
