Several dozen people gathered for a protest today to denounce the violence in Ukraine which has taken the lives of at least 25 people in the capital, Kyiv.
Many of the protesters say they worry that sanctions being considered by Canada, the United States and the European Union to end the violence may come too late to save their former country from economic and political disaster. Late yesterday, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Canada would consider a range of diplomatic options to send a message to the Yanukovych government including targeted sanctions. But some say it may already be too late for economic sanctions to have any meaningful effect. The demonstration comes as Ottawa announced the Canadian embassy in Kyiv has been closed for security reasons. Prime Minister, Stephen Harper has called for a peacful end to the confrontation. It was sparked three months ago by the government’s decision to favour Russia in trade dealings over the European Union.
