It’s by-election day in Ontario.  Voters in Niagara Falls and Thornhill are being invited to cast ballots in two provincial by-elections.  Polls suggest the New Democrats are in a close race with the Progressive Conservatives in Niagara Falls, a riding which has been Liberal for the past decade.  The other by-election in the GTA riding of Thornhill is a two-way contest between the governing Liberals and the PC’s, who had held the riding under Peter Shurman.

Premier Kathleen Wynne is being cautious about how she positions the importance of these votes.  “By-elections are their own unique creatures.  People can vote in these by-elections with impunity.  They know that on Friday morning, I’m going to be the Premier, we’re going to be in a minority parliament and we’re going to implement our plan.”  Regardless of the outcomes, the status of the minority Liberal government stays the same.  Wynne is rejecting suggestions she would want to call a general election in the spring if the Liberals manage to take both ridings.
