After a scoreless first period, the Canadian men’s hockey team pulled off a 3-1 victory over Norway in its first match of the Sochi Games. Carey Price made 19 saves in the Canadian net. Canada’s next game is Friday against Austria. Meanwhile, Canada’s Patrick Chan has finished second in the men’s figure skating short program at the Sochi Olympics. The three-time world champion from Toronto finished with a score of 97.52 points. It was a strong skate from Chan, but not enough to beat Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu and his world-record score of 101.45. And in a shocking development, Russia’s Evgeni Plushenko withdrew for medical reasons and later announced his retirement.
