The RCMP allege that the giant engineering company SNC-Lavalin paid nearly $6 million to the son-in-law of Tunisia’s president between 2001 and 2010 – to win contracts in the North African country.
In a police affidavit the Mounties say the payments in question were made at a period when a variety of major contracts were awarded to SNC-Lavalin in Tunisia.
The affidavit says Swiss authorities uncovered the Tunisian payments as part of an investigation into corruption and money laundering and they add to allegations in an earlier, partially blacked-out version of the affidavit that the engineering company also paid $160 million in kickbacks to the son of dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in exchange for contracts in Libya.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
