FLAHERTY IN THE DOG HOUSE OVER INCOME SPLITTING?

Under normal circumstances, federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty would be enjoying the praise of his party colleagues for the budget he tabled on Tuesday.

But instead there are indications Flaherty is being punished by the Prime Minister over the issue of income splitting.

Flaherty went on the record yesterday saying he doesn’t think income splitting would help most Canadians. But it was a key campaign promise for the Conservatives in the last election. They haven’t been able to bring it in because of the recession.

Flaherty sat silent during Question Period yesterday as the prime minister answered most questions about the budget that Flaherty delivered less than 24 hours earlier. NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says it’s pretty clear Flaherty was sidelined by his boss.

Income-splitting would cost the government $7.5-billion a year. Think tanks as diverse as the CD Howe Institute and the Centre for Policy Alternatives have said they don’t think income splitting would help anyone but the very rich.

The Prime Minister will not be in the Commons for Question Period today, so Jim Flaherty will be back on the hot seat defending his budget.
