The president of The Beer Store, Ted Moroz says if it loses its monopoly for selling beer a case of 24 bottles of beer could rise to $50. The current price is $37.95. The price increase is based on new research released this afternoon at the Toronto Board of Trade by Moroz. PC Leader Tim Hudak has said he wants to end the monopoly on beer and liquor sales by allowing the sale of alcohol in private outlets like corner and grocery stores. Premier Kathleen says her government has no plan to allow beer sales in corner stores. The Beer Store is privately-owned by Labatt Brewing, Molson Coors Canada, and Sleeman Breweries. Greg Flanagan is an economist who has studied the privatization of retail alcohol sales. He was commissioned to perform the detailed study that points to privatization in Alberta and B.C. resulting in higher prices and less efficient operating systems. The impact of wider sales on the tax system is also considered. Flanagan concluded that if Ontario followed Alberta’s trends of liquor revenues since 1993 it would have cost the provincial treasury 5.4-billion dollars over the past two decades.
