An engineer has been charged in connection with the deadly June 2012 roof collapse of a shopping mall in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Ontario Provincial Police have charged 64-year-old Robert Wood with two counts of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. A judicial inquiry into the roof collapse at the Algo Centre Mall has heard that Wood declared the centre structurally sound just weeks before it gave way. The inquiry heard the roof of the poorly designed and built mall had leaked from the beginning, and decades of water and salt penetration caused severe rusting of its steel support structure.
Two women were killed in the collapse 74-year old Doloris Perizzolo and 37-year old Lucie Aylwin. Police say the criminal investigation into the case will continue.
