TORONTO MAYOR DEFENDS LATEST PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS

Rob Ford’s approval rating as Toronto’s mayor is still high at 45 percent, despite a new video showing him inebriation at a Rexdale restaurant on Monday. A Forum Research poll conducted last night found his approval rating down just two percent from two weeks ago. And 37 percent say they would vote to re-elect Ford, down from 41 percent two weeks ago.

When placed against possible candidates Olivia Chow and John Tory, the poll indicates Ford would end up in a tie vote.

Rob Ford offered no apologies for the video that showed him apparently incoherent, ranting in Jamaican slang and using profanities. He says his personal life doesn’t detract from his work as mayor and what he does on his own time is his own business.

Several councillors disagree, saying being Mayor of Toronto is a 24-hour job.

Ford also spoke out sharply after the Executive Committee announced it was recommending a 2.23% property tax increase be sent to city council for approval. He reiterated his claim that, as soon as councillors stripped him of many of his powers, they returned to their “tax-and-spend ways.”

That did not sit well with Councillor Denzil Minan-Wong. He pointed out that Ford hasn’t proposed any cost-cutting measures this year, either before or after losing his powers. Minan-Wong called Ford a coward.

City Council will begin debating the 2014 budget next Wednesday.
