Former Prime Minister Paul Martin has been tapped by Premier, Kathleen Wynne to give advice on how to design a made-in-Ontario pension plan. Wynne announced today that Martin will serve as a special adviser to Finance Minister Charles Sousa on improving retirement security. Wynne has stressed that enhancing the existing Canada Pension Plan is her preferred course of action. But she says the reluctance of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty means Ontario will likely have to go it alone. Because CPP benefits max out at 12-thousand dollars a year the premier said there is a need to force people to save more for their retirement. Only about a third of Ontarians have a workplace-based pension plan. Susan Eng, Vice President, Advocacy for CARP, A New Vision of Aging for Canadians, says Martin is the right man for the job.
