London’s Victoria and Albert Museum will be posting an online list of modern art works which were reviled by the Nazis and confiscated from German museums in 1937 and 1938.
While some of the estimated 20,000 confiscated works were destroyed – others have resurfaced since the end of the Second World War.
The Victoria and Albert possesses the only known complete list of works dubbed “degenerate art” by the Nazis.
The list was donated to the museum in 1996 by the widow of Harry Fischer, an Austrian-born art dealer, who fled to Britain in 1938. It isn’t known how he came to possess the list.
The museum says recent revelations that Cornelius Gurlitt – the elderly son of a Nazi-era art dealer, had a secret collection believed to include several missing works – has heightened awareness of the importance of information about the confiscated art.
