How much did your health care cost last year?

Nobody knows. Except the government. And they don’t give out that kind of information.

But the CEO of a hospital in Windsor says it’s time Queen’s Park gave us an idea of just how much it costs to be treated in this province. Windsor Regional CEO David Musyj says sending everyone a summary at the end of the year, or the end of a hospital stay, would open a lot of eyes to just how much the medical system costs.

Musyj says he came up with the idea after watching the series, Breaking Bad, in which the lead character goes on a crime spree to pay for his chemotherapy treatments. Musyj says, if the series had been set in Canada, it would have only been one episode. The character would have had his chemo, gone home, and that would be the end of it.

The idea is getting some traction at Queen’s Park. Both opposition parties like it. PC health critic Christine Elliott says people keep hearing the health-care system is unsustainable, but giving us an idea of how much we each cost the system would help frame the debate on health care costs.

But the Health Ministry says the cost of preparing individual reports would drain funds from frontline care.
