Familiar films and names are in the running for Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars.
The space thriller Gravity leads the list of contenders for the British Academy Film Awards, known as the BAFTAs.
Gravity is nominated in eleven categories, including best picture and lead actress, for Sandra Bullock.
Twelve Years a Slave follows with ten nominations, including best picture, star Chiwetel Ejiofor, and director Steve McQueen.
The BAFTAs frequently give a clue as to how the American Academy is leaning. They will be awarded February 16th.
Steve McQueen has also secured a best director nomination from the Director’s Guild of America. He’s joined by Gravity’s Alfonso Cuaron, Paul Greengrass for Captain Philips, Martin Scorcese for The Wolf of Wall Street, and David O. Russell for American Hustle.
If McQueen wins, he will become the first black director to win the DGA honour.
