A surprise from the American Dialect Society: it has chosen “because” as it’s word of the year.
Ben Zimmer is the chair of the Society’s New Words Committee and he says that casual online usage has transformed the venerable word “because” and it doesn’t have to be followed by “of” or a full clause anymore.
In a statement Zimmer says “one often sees teresly – worded rationales online such as “because science” and one might not go to a party “because tired.”
