Toronto’s embattled mayor was first in line this morning to register for this October’s municipal election.  Ford was feeling confident about his bid for a second term as he made some predictions for 2014.  “I’m going to win the election,” he laughed, “and hopefully the Blue Jays will get in the playoffs and hopefully the Leafs will win the cup.”

Councillor Doug Ford says his brother can take credit for Toronto’s economic recovery.  “You have to look at where this city was before this administration took office and where it is now,” Councillor Ford explained, “We have the best financial record in North America, we brought down the unemployment rate from 11.5 percent to 7.5 percent, the city has more cranes than New York, Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta combined.  We are booming in this city, just booming, and we’re going to continue to create jobs.”

Rob Ford made international headlines last year for admitting to smoking crack.  He was then stripped of much of his power by Toronto City Council.  But the weakened mayor is not out.  An Ipsos-Reid poll in November showed Ford behind, but in contention, in a mayoral race with undeclared candidates Olivia Chow and John Tory.  Declared candidates, outgoing TTC Chair Karen Stintz, and former City Budget Chief David Soknacki, are expected to wait another couple of months to register.
