”Lawrence of Arabia” in 1962 was the role that made Irish born actor a worldwide star.
More big roles followed but serious illnesses in the 1970s, threatened to destroy O’Toole’s career.
He recovered and made a comeback in the 1980s with ”The Stuntman” and “My Favourite Year”.
While he never won an Oscar despite many nominations, O’Toole was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Academy Awards ten years ago.

Peter O’Toole was 81.
His agent says he died in hospital following a long illness.
