CARP – a New Vision of Aging – is helping to bolster efforts by the Ontario government to enhance the Canada Pension Plan. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne met this morning with CARP’s Vice President of Advocacy Susan Eng and four chapter chairs. “The position that CARP is taking is a very compelling one because they’re not actually arguing for their own well being, they’re arguing on behalf of their children and grandchildren,” said Wynne at Queen’s Park.
Premier Wynne and CARP are putting pressure on the federal government ahead of this Sunday’s meeting of the federal and provincial finance ministers. “We believe that enhancement to CPP would protect every person in Ontario. We want hard working people to have the retirement saving security they deserve.” Premier Wynne offered highlights of a report put out by CARP which says, “if we do nothing, twenty years from now 600,000 seniors in Canada will be living in poverty and millions more will be on the edge.”
CARP joins Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne as strong supporters of a proposal by PEI Premier Wes Sheridan to beef up the CPP. His proposal calls for a near doubling of maximum annual benefits to $23,400 from the current $12,150. If the provincial ministers agree in principal, details could be worked out as early as next summer.
